Növlan - 1955 mahonkinen tuulilasivene Ahvenanmaalta

Hi all and greetings from Estonia. I have read puuvene.fi quite a lot the last weeks. Special thanks to Jape's project page where I got more confidence that nothing is impossible to repair

I have just recently bought a 1955 mahogony boat from Mariehamn, Åland, built originally by R.Boman in Geta for Stig Lundqvist.





Boat is ~5,8x1,6m in size with an outboard engine (Evinrude 20). The boat needs quite a lot of work as it has been on the ground for the last 2 years and has not seen very thorough maintenance in its last years. The previous owners tell me a total of 5 boats like this were made, but I have not come across any others yet. If you know someone out there owning one or have more information, it would be nice to hear.

Nice looking boat.
If you plan to do the work by yourself and are new to wooden boats then a word of advice..
Do one spot at the time not complete restoration on one run.
That way boat stays more usable during the work and you get energy for further work when you see some parts all ready done.

Thanks. Boat needs an overall restoration I am afraid, so I am not satisfying with a few smaller touch-ups. I do not plan to launch the boat before 2013 obviously. Currently been busy dismanteling the interior and transom + scraping off the old varnish using scraper and Owatrol paint/oil removers.

PS! On my blogsite, there is a picture of a really useful tool I made by tuning the heat gun, work just flys with it and it is a lot more comfortable to use on vertical surfaces than to have both hands full. I was recommended this approach by a local boat builder/restorer and I thought I would share it with you - give this a try!

I suspect linseed oil has been used at some time in the inside, underneath it the first layer looks OK, but the top one is blistering at points. Trying to heat it with a heat gun, it just melts and smears. How to go about removal? Paint removal chemistry?
I would eventually like to get to almost clean wood to saturate the boat also from inside

I managed to dismantle the boat and scrape it clean by the end of summer last year. The progress then halted until in the beginning of March 2013, she was taken to a nearby workshop (where Benenavis boats are made, http://www.benenavis.eu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) for restoration.



Progress has been good, now waiting for some bling and more Owatrol D2 to be delivered. Definitely will be ready for launching this spring.

If someone knows an older looking outboard engine that would look good on her, please recommend. Offers welcomed too, engine has to be with short shaft, electronic starter and in very good condition

Soon the boat is ready and all wood work+detailing finished. More to come with electrics, also neet to put the covers on and set the engine in place with accessories.

Komea paatti. Japen huomautus kuvan klikkaamisesta oli tarpeen. Meikäläisen englannilla ei nuo jutut aukea, mutta Ruotsiksi kirjoittuna ehkä vähän paremmin - tosin siitäkin on niin kauan kun sitä käytin aktiivisemmin. Kaunis pieni vene joka tapauksessa.
