Renovation
Sailing Antinea from Sweden to Finland was exiting. She nearly
sank in front of Upinniemi. When Renlunds finally got to
Helsinki and took a good look at her, they realized the
terrible shape she was in. When washing the yacht with a pressure
washer, big slices of paint and putty came loose. The keel loosened with bare hands.
Mikael and Robert tried to cancel the deal, but the previous
owner was taken into hospital and could not answer any contact attempts.
Renlunds got Lage Sundfors interested in the renovation
project. Antinea was transported to Kokkola. All the paint was
sanded off because some of the previous owners had painted
her white. The original wooden deck was repalced with one made
of plywood and she still had the iron keel. She had a metal mast. Her hull had collapsed, so her nose and tail
were "hanging". Her lenght was 37cm less from original, because her tail had been beweled. The sides were full of
stud holes, because she had both her old rotten ribs and new ribs next to them to keep the yacht together.
It was planned that Sundfors would do some renovation and restoration under the waterline, but he soon realised
it would not be enough. Sundfors thought it would be easier to build a whole new yacht beside the old one. Renlunds
had four options to choose from: build a new yacht, cover the damage and sail a
couple of years, burn the yacht as a midsummer bonfire or
do a complete restoration. They chose the last option.
During the seven years of restroration Antinea every
usable old part was used. Only the useless parts were
replaced with new. When the job was finally done she was
back in her original shape and length. Antinea had got for
example new ribs, new broadside and new deck. The steel keel
had been replaced with lead keel, which was a copy of the
original keel. Autumn 1998 Antinea was launched as reborn.
